If you’re looking to get into sailing, choosing which training course will suit you best can be a daunting decision to make. The first step before booking anything is to do plenty of research and try to establish what training you need to improve, build on your current experience and learn new skills.
If you have never sailed before, you will need to a course that will equip you with all the fundamental skills such as boat safety, steering, rope work and trimming sails. The are hundreds of places around the country that offer two day RYA Start Yachting Course, or five day RYA Competent Crew course.
Again, do your research and find out which schools and courses come highly recommended online. Bad training will affect your fundamental skills and have a negative effect on your future sailing experience.
If you have sailed before, with a level of competency, RYA Day Skipper Course and the RYA Coastal Skipper Course will help you either brush up on your skills or take your abilities to the next level.
Once you’ve had basic training, you should think realistically about how far you want to progress, and then plan to take future courses that will help you achieve that goal. A good progression would be to start with a RYA Start Yachting Course, then a RYA Competent Crew Course, followed by a BOSS Master Classes.
Once you’ve decided which course you want to book, you can find the closest training facility to you on the RYA website.
