Last month Jonny Boys, Managing Director of the Trafalgar Group, based in Portsmouth, gave away free boat storage to anyone buying or selling a new boat. The industry loved it. And now it looks like the good times might come back sooner than expected.
“This summer is going to be one for staycationing for the majority of people. We just did 124 launches and recoveries from our Drystack on a weekday,” Jonny says. “That's a new record. And it looks like everyone really wants to get out on the water as much as possible. Whilst there are reports of £1m social distancing package holidays abroad for the super rich – with private jets, helicopter transfers and private villas – that's not what most people are in the market for.”
And judging from the number of new enquiries Jonny is getting for his boat-share club, it looks like staycationers are heading for the Solent. With an over 80% increase in enquiries from last spring, and an 18% increase in membership during the lockdown and easing of restrictions.
“Boat Club Trafalgar is where you pay a subscription – a few pounds a day – and you get to choose from a number of boats to go out on. You don't have to invest in your own boat and it's perfect for staycationers. People want flexibility. They know that this summer and the rest of the year is uncertain in terms of leisure and work. So they want easy options they can enjoy.”
Trevor Wood who signed his family up to the club this week comments, "We’re very excited to be joining the Boat Club, and looking forward to being able to do something, whilst everything else seems to be locked down. It will great to get out locally and have some fun."
Callan Cessford, another new member adds, "We’re really excited about joining. Particularly as, with everything that’s going on, we won't be going abroad this year so it will be nice to spend time on the water locally. We’re really impressed with the set-up, very professional, like the look of the boats and really looking forward to getting going."
With people looking for alternative activities to do with family and friends, Jonny recommends boating as a great activity. “With a boat club you can go waterskiing, fishing, explore beaches and marinas, swim in deserted places and really have an adventure – without stepping on a plane. If you are going to make the most of the summer and autumn then a boat club is a great way to do it.”
Boating is something you do with a group of people you know, and you are physically distanced from others. It gets you out into nature. There's the chance of seeing seals and dolphins and experiencing the sheer excitement and fun of being on the water. Jonny says “Everyone should try it.”
