Cross-Border Boating Trade Market Study - Powered by Magonis
The boat buying process has changed. It’s now more important than ever for boat sellers to stand out from the crowd to make sure their boats keep selling fast and for the best price. At the same time, it’s key to know where potential buyers are located and what they’re looking for – for sellers to reach them through their preferred channels, tailoring offers and messages to buyers’ needs.
To help you catch the wind in your sails this new year, boats.com has created a first-ever interactive market study about international trade in Europe for the nautical industry.
47% of all boating demand in Europe is cross-border.
In our current global industry, it’s common for boats to be sold abroad, with much demand* coming from other countries. According to our study, 47% of all boating demand in Europe in 2022 came from outside the country of origin*. For some boat classes and price segments, this cross-border demand can be up to 80%
* (demand referring to total boat detail page views)
* (origin meaning the country where the boat is located)
Furthermore, the study shows that the classes that benefit from the highest cross-border demand are sailing multihulls, sailing cruisers and motor yachts.
The higher the price, the more foreign demand
If you currently own a boat and are ready to sell, chances are you have an international market waiting for you.
Our interactive dashboard will help you analyse the offer and demand for boats across Europe, so you can spot opportunities quickly. The dashboard’s map shows users what countries the demand is coming from and how great the share of the total European demand is for each country – so sellers know exactly where in Europe their potential buyers are located.
Boat price influences the share of foreign demand. In general, our study shows that the higher the price, the more foreign demand. As you start exploring new markets, you’ll be able to reflect this by adapting your price for each of the local portals you advertise your boat on.
To help get you started advertising your boat abroad, we’ve listed some of the most popular boating marketplaces in Europe below:
Annonces du Bateau - France
iNautia - Italy
Cosas De Barcos - Spain
Boats and Outboards - UK
Boot24 - Germany
Botentekoop - Netherlands
Boatshop24 - Northern Europe
boats.com - Europe & Global
YachtWorld - Europe & Global
iNautia, Botentekoop, Boatshop24, boats.com and YachtWorld offer navigation in English.
Still searching for your dream boat?
If you’re based in Germany, the UK or the Netherlands, you’ll likely need to look abroad for your next dream boat, as these countries tend to receive more demand than local sellers can accommodate. That means that, like many other Northern European boat buyers, you can instead browse listings in countries like France, Spain and Italy.
It’s the opposite for Southern Europeans like Greeks, Croatians and Portuguese. Boats located in these countries receive a lot of international demand, but buyers from these countries don’t tend to look beyond their countries of origin to purchase their own boats.
The correlation between cost and amount of foreign demand indicates that people are prepared to search abroad to get a better offer. You too can use our interactive dashboard to your advantage to ensure you find the right boat at the right price.
